A Practical Approach to Securing Microservices Communication

Microservices give Australian organisations flexibility, faster release cycles and the ability to scale individual functions independently. They also create a larger communication surface, with application programming interfaces, service meshes, queues, databases and third-party integrations exchanging data across complex environments.

A security weakness in one service can affect many others. An exposed API token, an overly permissive identity policy or an unencrypted internal connection may allow attackers to move laterally before traditional perimeter controls detect unusual behaviour.

This risk is especially relevant to banks, healthcare providers, retailers and government agencies operating across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and regional locations. Customer expectations for fast mobile experiences and always-on digital services leave little room for insecure service-to-service traffic.

Australian organisations must also consider the Privacy Act, the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act and industry requirements such as APRA CPS 234. Secure microservices communication therefore needs to combine engineering controls, governance and continuous monitoring.

Map Every Service Interaction

Start by creating an inventory of services, endpoints, message brokers, data stores and external dependencies. Document which service calls another, what information is exchanged, where workloads run and which identities are authorised to initiate each request.

A dependency map should include synchronous REST or GraphQL calls, asynchronous events, scheduled jobs and administrative interfaces. It should also identify traffic between cloud accounts, on-premises networks and managed platforms. Unknown connections are difficult to protect, test or investigate.

Classify data before selecting controls. Payment details, health information, identity records and government-related information require tighter handling than generic operational data. Mapping data flows helps security teams apply protection according to business impact rather than treating every connection identically.

Establish Strong Workload Identity

Microservices should authenticate as distinct workloads rather than relying on shared usernames, static passwords or broad network access. Use short-lived certificates, signed tokens or cloud-native workload identities that can be rotated automatically.

Authorisation should follow least privilege. A service that reads customer preferences should not have permission to modify payment records or access an unrelated production database. Fine-grained policies can restrict access by service identity, environment, namespace, action and data type.

Secrets belong in a managed vault, not in source code, container images or configuration files stored in repositories. Rotation schedules, emergency revocation and access logs should be tested regularly. For teams reviewing an external security testing resource, secret exposure and identity misuse are valuable areas to include in the assessment scope.

Encrypt And Validate Service Traffic

Transport Layer Security should protect communications between services, including traffic inside a cluster. Mutual TLS provides an additional safeguard by requiring both sides of a connection to prove their identity before exchanging data.

Certificates must have an accountable lifecycle. Automate issuance, renewal and revocation, then alert on expired credentials, unexpected issuers and weak protocol settings. Encryption without reliable certificate management can create outages or encourage teams to bypass controls.

Every request should be validated at the receiving service. Check schemas, content types, message size, input formats and authorisation context. Rate limits, replay protection and strict timeout settings reduce the impact of malformed requests and denial-of-service attempts.

Secure APIs And Event Channels

API gateways can centralise authentication, throttling, web application firewall rules and basic request inspection, but they should not become the only security layer. Each microservice still needs independent authorisation and input validation because attackers may reach internal endpoints through compromised workloads.

Event-driven systems require similar discipline. Protect Kafka topics, queues and subscriptions with separate permissions, encrypt messages in transit and at rest, and prevent consumers from reading more topics than necessary. Validate event producers so a fraudulent message cannot trigger refunds, account changes or data deletion.

Use versioned contracts and reject unexpected fields where appropriate. Detailed error messages should help operators without revealing database structures, credentials or internal routing information. API and event logs should capture correlation IDs so a transaction can be traced across multiple services.

Monitor Behaviour Around The Clock

Logs from gateways, service meshes, identity providers, containers and cloud platforms should feed into a central monitoring capability. A SIEM can correlate events such as a new workload identity, an unusual data request and a burst of failed authentication attempts.

Behavioural baselines make detection more useful. A service that normally communicates with two internal endpoints may deserve investigation if it suddenly contacts dozens of systems. Alerts should cover privilege escalation, token reuse, unexpected geographic access, abnormal data volume and changes to network policy.

Continuous visibility matters for Australian organisations serving customers outside standard office hours. A late-night login from an unfamiliar location may coincide with legitimate operations in another time zone, so alert enrichment and clear escalation procedures are essential. Security analysts need enough context to distinguish business activity from lateral movement.

Test Resilience And Compliance

Penetration testing should examine the full communication path rather than only public websites. Test authentication, authorisation, service discovery, container boundaries, API gateways, message queues and cloud configuration. Include abuse cases such as token theft, forged events and compromised low-privilege services.

Run tabletop exercises for certificate failure, identity-provider compromise, exposed secrets and malicious internal traffic. Recovery plans should explain how to isolate a service, revoke credentials, preserve evidence and maintain critical customer functions.

Controls Worth Prioritising

  • Build and maintain a live service dependency and data-flow inventory.
  • Use mutual TLS or equivalent workload authentication for sensitive connections.
  • Enforce least-privilege access for APIs, queues, databases and cloud resources.
  • Store secrets in a managed vault with automatic rotation and revocation.
  • Centralise logs and correlate service activity through a SIEM.
  • Perform recurring VAPT, configuration reviews and incident response exercises.

A practical control framework should connect engineering teams with risk, compliance and operations. Record exceptions, assign owners and set review dates so temporary access does not become permanent.

Begin with the services that process the most sensitive information or support the most critical customer journeys. Infoziant Security can help assess microservices, cloud infrastructure and API exposure through tailored VAPT, monitoring and security advisory services. Arrange an assessment or trial engagement to turn service-to-service visibility into measurable protection.
