How to Validate the Security of Your Identity Provider Integration

An identity provider sits on a critical trust boundary between users, applications and APIs. When its integration is weak, attackers can steal sessions, cross tenant boundaries or misuse delegated access. The provider’s own controls matter, but your organisation must also validate how it issues, validates and consumes identity assertions.

Treat this as an end-to-end assurance exercise, not a checkbox for federation configuration. Document expected users, claims, grants and data access, then test them under normal, hostile and failure conditions. This approach supports Australian Privacy Act obligations while producing evidence that technical teams, risk owners and auditors can use.

Map the identity trust boundary

Begin with a trust-boundary diagram covering workforce employees, customer consumers, partner portals and service accounts. Show the browser or mobile app, identity provider, relying-party application, API gateway and downstream data stores. Record every trust jump, including token exchange, callback and administrative path, because a protected login can still lead to excessive access.

Build a threat model around realistic misuse: stolen credentials, phishing, session replay, token substitution, confused-deputy exchanges, malicious redirects and tenant mix-ups. Prioritise paths that can expose regulated data rather than every theoretical weakness. Where authentication callbacks trigger serverless functions, a serverless security assessment should cover function authorisation, secrets, event validation and observability as part of the same review.

Verify protocol and session controls

Test the protocol implementation, not merely the vendor console. For OIDC and OAuth, validate issuer, audience, authorised party, nonce, state, PKCE, redirect URIs, scopes and token lifetimes; reject ID tokens used as access tokens. For SAML, check signatures, destination, audience, conditions and assertion replay. Pin approved signing algorithms, validate claims against local policy, and verify JWKS refresh, cache-poisoning resistance and outage behaviour.

Session behaviour is equally important: rotate the session after authentication, set Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite cookies, keep tokens out of local storage, and test logout, revocation and step-up authentication. Australians commonly encounter SMS one-time passcodes in online banking and government services, but SMS can be phished or intercepted; treat it as a risk-based fallback, not proof of identity. Broader identity threat guidance can help teams model infostealer and phishing behaviour alongside protocol tests.

Run focused validation tests

Execute tests in a representative, authorised test tenant and retain request traces, token metadata and expected outcomes. Use the following checks to cover both protocol behaviour and the application layer.

Protocol and token checks

  • Alter signatures, algorithms, issuers, audiences and tenant claims; every invalid assertion must fail closed.
  • Replay expired, revoked or cross-tenant tokens and submit an ID token where an access token is required.
  • Exercise authorisation-code and redirect flows for missing state, nonce, PKCE and overly broad redirect URIs.
  • Force signing-key rotation, stale JWKS responses and identity-provider outages to expose unsafe caching and fallback logic.

Application and operational checks

  • Attempt horizontal and vertical privilege escalation through profile, role and object-level endpoints.
  • Review group-to-role mapping, service-account privileges and orphaned accounts after joiners, movers and leavers.
  • Inspect SIEM events for anomalous logins, token misuse and privilege changes without recording secrets or raw tokens.
  • Simulate compromised accounts, account recovery, session revocation and incident response from alert to containment.

Repeat these tests after remediation and after identity-provider configuration changes. A successful login proves only that authentication worked; it does not demonstrate that the resulting session has the correct audience, tenant, scope and privilege.

Check cloud, mobile and compliance exposure

Australian governance makes identity failures operationally significant. Under the Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Privacy Principles and Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, exposed personal information can trigger assessment, notification and remediation where applicable. Financial institutions must align controls with APRA CPS 230, while government and critical-infrastructure bodies often use ASD’s Essential Eight as a security baseline. Healthcare integrations involving My Health Records add significant consequences to confused identity matching and unauthorised access.

For teams running hybrid workloads across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, validate whether identity claims and session metadata cross approved cloud regions and service boundaries. Assess cloud roles, workload identity, secrets, key custody and API gateways, not only end-user login screens. Mobile apps require separate checks for deep links, exported databases, rooted devices, screenshot exposure and operating-system keystore use. Feed relevant identity events into SIEM monitoring with tested alert ownership and after-hours escalation.

Remediate findings and sustain assurance

Convert findings into ranked remediation actions that identify the affected trust boundary, exploit condition, business consequence and accountable owner. Treat high-impact authorisation flaws and long-lived unauthenticated tokens as immediate priorities. Fix the relying party and provider configuration together, add regression tests to CI/CD, and retest tenant isolation, privilege mapping and failure handling after each change. Track configuration drift, contract changes, new applications and identity-provider upgrades as release gates.

Infoziant Security can run a scoped, trial-based identity provider integration assessment combining manual protocol analysis, targeted penetration testing and SIEM validation. Start with a free VAPT report to benchmark the environment, document exposed paths and prioritise the first remediation sprint.
