Securing Virtual Private Cloud Networks In AWS And Azure

Cloud platforms give Australian organisations the flexibility to scale applications, store data and support distributed teams. They also introduce security responsibilities that cannot be left entirely to a provider. A virtual private cloud, or its Azure equivalent, needs carefully designed access controls, network segmentation, monitoring and recovery processes.

AWS and Microsoft Azure provide strong native security features, but those features must be configured for the organisation’s architecture and risk profile. A public-facing web application, an internal finance platform and a healthcare workload will require different controls, even when they run in the same cloud environment.

For businesses operating in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, cloud security must also reflect local obligations and operating conditions. Requirements such as the Australian Privacy Act, APRA CPS 234, the Essential Eight, the SOCI Act and data residency expectations can influence how cloud environments are designed and monitored.

Design A Clear Cloud Network Architecture

Begin with a documented inventory of cloud accounts, subscriptions, virtual networks, workloads, data stores and external connections. In AWS, this may include VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups and network access control lists. In Azure, equivalent components include virtual networks, network security groups, peering and Azure Firewall policies.

Separate internet-facing services from application and database tiers. Private subnets, restricted routing and controlled egress reduce the chance that a compromised web server can reach sensitive systems. Use dedicated environments for development, testing and production, with strict controls preventing accidental connections between them.

Centralised network design is valuable for organisations with several business units or cloud subscriptions. AWS Transit Gateway and Azure Virtual WAN can support controlled connectivity, while a hub-and-spoke model can make inspection and policy enforcement easier to manage.

Strengthen Identity And Access Controls

Identity is the main security boundary in a cloud environment. Use single sign-on, phishing-resistant multifactor authentication and role-based access for employees, contractors and service accounts. Privileged access should be temporary where possible, with approvals, session logging and regular access reviews.

Avoid shared administrator accounts and long-lived access keys. Workloads should use managed identities or tightly scoped roles, while secrets should be stored in services such as AWS Secrets Manager, AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store or Azure Key Vault. Apply least privilege to both human users and machine identities.

A practical baseline for AWS and Azure environments includes:

  • Enforce multifactor authentication for privileged and remote access
  • Apply separate roles for administration, deployment, monitoring and support
  • Review inactive identities, permissions and access keys regularly
  • Restrict management interfaces to approved networks or secure bastions
  • Use policy-as-code to detect unauthorised configurations

Monitor Network Activity And Cloud Threats

Security controls are less effective when there is no reliable visibility. Enable flow logs, firewall logs, identity events, endpoint telemetry and administrative activity records across every account and subscription. Send relevant events to a central SIEM so analysts can identify patterns across cloud and on-premises systems.

Alerting should focus on meaningful indicators, such as unusual data transfers, new privileged roles, disabled logging, suspicious geolocation changes or unexpected connections to external services. Australian organisations may need to investigate activity across offices in Canberra, Sydney and regional locations, making centralised monitoring especially useful.

A managed security service can provide 24/7 monitoring, threat intelligence, triage and escalation when internal teams are unavailable. This is particularly valuable for financial services, healthcare providers and e-commerce companies that operate beyond standard business hours.

Protect Workloads Data And Recovery

Encryption should be applied to data in transit and at rest, with keys managed according to business and compliance requirements. Classify information before selecting storage and backup locations. Sensitive personal, financial and health information may require additional controls around access, retention and Australian data handling.

Cloud security also depends on workload hardening. Remove unused ports, patch operating systems and containers, scan infrastructure templates before deployment and protect application programming interfaces with authentication, rate limiting and input validation. Public storage containers and unmanaged snapshots should be checked continuously.

Resilience controls should be designed before an incident occurs:

  • Maintain immutable or protected backups for critical workloads
  • Test restoration procedures across AWS and Azure dependencies
  • Define recovery time and recovery point objectives for each service
  • Use multiple availability zones where appropriate
  • Document failover ownership, communication paths and approval limits

Test Compliance And Improve Readiness

Configuration reviews and penetration testing can reveal weaknesses that automated tools miss. A vulnerability assessment may identify exposed services, excessive permissions or missing patches, while penetration testing can examine whether those weaknesses can be combined to reach sensitive assets.

Testing should cover cloud consoles, APIs, containers, mobile applications, VPNs, identity providers and connected corporate networks. Assessments should be authorised, carefully scoped and scheduled to avoid disrupting production workloads. Findings need clear severity ratings, evidence, business impact and remediation owners.

For organisations working with government or regulated industries, map controls to the Essential Eight, the Information Security Manual, APRA expectations, ISO 27001 or relevant contractual requirements. Independent review can also support IRAP-related preparation and demonstrate that cloud security controls are operating effectively.

Infoziant Security helps Australian organisations assess AWS and Azure environments through vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, cloud security reviews, SIEM monitoring and managed detection services. A free VAPT report or trial-based engagement can provide a practical view of exposed risks, configuration gaps and priority improvements. Contact Infoziant Security to arrange an assessment and strengthen your cloud network before a minor weakness becomes a major incident.
