How to conduct a penetration test on a GraphQL API endpoint

GraphQL consolidates queries, mutations and subscriptions behind a single HTTP endpoint, so a limited URL check can miss dangerous field-level flaws. Effective penetration testing follows the schema, resolver logic and authorisation boundaries rather than treating the endpoint as an ordinary web route.

Begin by identifying what an attacker can reach with an anonymous session, a standard customer account, an administrator account and a service token. The objective is to demonstrate realistic impact, such as reading another customer’s record or executing an unintended mutation, then enable the owner to fix the weakness.

Australian teams in Sydney and Melbourne support a local market spanning fintech, online retail, healthcare and government integrations. Testing should reflect Australian privacy duties, local threat conditions and sector controls without interrupting everyday mobile banking or online checkout services.

Set scope, permissions and safeguards

Obtain written authorisation naming the endpoint, environment, test accounts, permitted tools and testing window. Clarify whether production is in scope, which data may be touched and how the team can reach an emergency contact. Exclude unrelated third-party APIs, payment providers and mobile applications.

Create a test plan with success criteria, request limits and stop conditions. Use synthetic records wherever possible, especially for customer or healthcare data protected by the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. Monitor service health and use separate credentials so test activity cannot be mistaken for genuine customer behaviour.

Map the schema and exposed operations

Discover the endpoint using approved credentials and client headers, then inspect its schema, operations, directives and authentication requirements. Introspection can accelerate mapping, but its absence does not establish security and its presence is not automatically a vulnerability. Capture requests through an approved proxy so operation names, variables and response differences remain visible during analysis.

Inventory queries, mutations, subscriptions, fragments, unions, interfaces and upload handlers. Note nested relationships, pagination arguments and fields returning sensitive information. In an Australian retailer, for example, a catalogue query may lead to order, customer or warehouse data through an apparently harmless field.

Test authentication and object-level authorisation

Prioritise authorisation testing because flexible queries can bypass coarse route restrictions. Attempt cross-tenant and object-level access using IDs owned by another test user. Vary identifiers, aliases, nested selections and direct object references to check whether every resolver enforces the same tenant and role policy.

Check expired, revoked or wrongly scoped tokens, missing audience checks and substitution of a restricted operation for a permitted one. Test anonymous, customer, support, administrator and service-account roles, including field-level permissions and administrative mutations. Log attempts to distinguish access-control failures from deliberately restricted functions.

Probe resolver and input vulnerabilities

GraphQL’s typed arguments reduce some malformed-input risk, yet values still reach databases, shell commands, templates, file paths and outbound requests. Probe SQL and NoSQL injection, command injection, path traversal and server-side request forgery with harmless canaries. Validate remote URLs and file destinations against strict allowlists.

Review mutations for business-logic flaws such as negative quantities, repeated discounts, duplicate fulfilment requests and privilege changes hidden inside input objects. Test race conditions only with agreed low-value records and concurrency limits. Upload paths and webhook destinations can connect an ordinary field to the wider cloud environment.

Evaluate denial-of-service and disclosure risks

Assess resource exhaustion by examining query depth, complexity, alias multiplication, batching, pagination limits and expensive resolver chains. Establish thresholds that reflect real workloads, then confirm the gateway rejects excessive depth, oversized lists and high-cost calculations. Apply request limits per identity and source, since one HTTP request can trigger thousands of downstream actions.

Inspect production errors, debug headers, source maps, schema suggestions and hidden fields for useful intelligence. Decide whether production introspection is appropriate, then verify that persisted-query allowlists reject unknown operations and sensitive-field filtering matches the documented exposure. Financial institutions subject to APRA CPS 230 should also check their change-management and incident-response controls.

Validate, document and retest findings

Turn each issue into a reproducible case with a minimal request, response evidence, affected role, business impact, root cause and remediation advice. Sanitise personal information and credentials in the report. Rank findings by exploitation likelihood and damage, separating schema design flaws from gateway, resolver or application defects so each owner can act.

Retest original attack paths after fixes, including nearby variations that might reveal an incomplete patch. Strong remediation combines default-deny field permissions, tenant-aware data access, stricter input validation, constrained resolver capabilities, safe errors and query-cost controls. An experienced team such as Infoziant Security can provide independent validation where release schedules limit internal testing.

Secure the endpoint with a scoped, evidence-led assessment tailored to your API and sector. Infoziant Security offers free vulnerability assessment and penetration testing reports, plus a trial-based engagement for teams ready to begin security testing, with managed monitoring, SIEM coverage and threat intelligence available as ongoing support.
